As winter comes to a halt in most parts of North America, slush gives way to Spring in the mountains, which is what most of us consider the start of Summer.  June is the perfect month to head to the mountains.  The temperatures are mostly mild with chilly nights, and a slight unpredictability of the weather makes it an exciting time to visit your favorite ski areas when the crowds have subsided.  June in the mountains is the time when resorts start kicking off their Summer events.  Some are unexpected, others a little crazy and some are even a bit muddy.  If you’re looking for a change of scenery, check out these fun and interesting June events going on at resorts across North America.

Windham Mountain, New York

I Love Downhill Grand Prix New York Skateboard & Streetluge Race | June 21-23, 2013

Still longing for your hair to be whipping in the wind in an endless winter?  The next best thing just might be bombing down a closed street course in the I Love Downhill Grand Prix New York Skateboard & Streetluge Race.  Slated for Friday, June 21 through Sunday, June 23, the race will take place at Windham Mountain, NY on Clarence D Lane Road.  The race course will prove to challenge top racers from around the world and delight spectators.  The course is boasted as over one mile long and includes 5 intense and technical turns with fast speeds.  For more information and a schedule of events check out Windham Mountain’s event page or to register go to ilovedh.com.

Whistler Blackcomb, BC Canada

Tough Mudder | June 22 – 23, 2013

If you’re looking for a unique team building experience, consider a mountain retreat that might end up in a little blood, sweat and tears.  Tough Mudder events are hardcore 10-12 mile obstacle courses designed by British Special Forces to test your all around strength, stamina, mental grit and camaraderie. Beautiful Whistler Blackcomb will set the backdrop for the Tough Mudder challenge June 2223.  You can expect to be put to the test with a multitude of gnarly obstacles such as Electroshock Therapy – a sprint through live wires and electrifying mud with up to 10,000 volts of electricity, and the Arctic Enema – a plunge into navigating icy waters.  All this might sound a bit intense for your mountain getaway, but the focus of Tough Mudder is camaraderie and a leaving with a sense of accomplishment.  Plus, the event raises money for the Wounded Warrior Project and has raised more than $5 million to date.  Think you’re tough enough?  Check out the Tough Mudder site for details and check out Whistler Blackcomb’s event page for details about the resort and accommodations.

Steamboat, Colorado

There is no shortage of events going on this June in Steamboat, Colorado.  There’s a bit of something for everyone – from golfing to eating to browsing local art, you’re sure to enjoy yourself in this gorgeous setting.

Savor Steamboat | June 15, 2013

Get the whole family ready for some bluegrass, local agriculture, food and drinks!  The event will showcase all Steamboat has to offer.  The Ranch Rendezvous will keep the kids entertained with local agriculture, animals galore, tractors and even an opportunity to learn the ropes about roping.  Adults, don’t worry – the shake and stir competition will feature bartenders from local restaurants duking it out for the title of Best Drink, and the Pork BBQ challenge will give you the opportunity to sample locally raised pork and vote for the best dish.

Art on the Mountain | June 28 – 30, 2013

Steamboats 12th annual Art on the Mountain event will feature a variety of local artisans displaying their works. Art on the Mountain would be a perfect time to pack picnic, browse unique art and take in the fresh mountain air and scenery.

Wanderlust Festival – June 20 – 23, 2013

Wanderlust is one of the largest yoga festivals and will be sure to help you to relax, rejuvenate and connect with nature and community.  Wanderlust will kick off its series of Summer yoga festivals on June 20 at the breathtaking Stratton Mountain.  A superstar lineup of yoga teachers, musicians, DJs and performers will keep yogis and non-yogis entertained.  Also, there is no shortage of activities, food or drink.  The festival’s Farm to Table Dinner is a must for those who love amazing, locally-sourced food and drinks set in a beautiful locale.   In addition to yoga, meditation, hooping and dancing, there are also outdoor expeditions such as standup paddleboard yoga, mountain biking and horseback riding.  Even if you’re not into yoga, you can still check out the marketplace, music, food or get a message and relax.  You can find the full schedule, lineup and planning information on the Wanderlust Festival site and be sure to take a look at Stratton’s site for resort details and accommodations.
