Every skier and rider has their bucket list of resorts they have to ski before they die. For me growing up, it was Whistler. There was something that seemed so foreign and exotic about skiing up there and I always aspired to make it there one day. I finally got the opportunity a few winters back and it was great. Everything I hoped it would be. Up until I broke my knee coming down the backside of Blackcomb on my very first day…
But I’m not here to talk ski injuries. That’s not the purpose of this post! The purpose is to talk about aspirational skiing. How one of the intrinsic beauties of this sport is in the diversity of ski areas, exploring the geography and topography, getting to know the nuance of snow types in different regions, thinking you’ve skied it all and then having one of those moments that makes you feel like a kid again as you cruise down something totally unfamiliar with a shit-eating-grin on your face.
When we think of those ski areas we absolutely have to experience at least once in our life, there are a handful of resorts that always seem to be in the mix. Maybe this winter is when you finally drop into Corbet’s Couloir at Jackson Hole. Or ski Devil’s Castle at Alta. Maybe this is the year you make the pilgrimage to Aspen/Snowmass and hike Highland Bowl. Or just maybe this is going to be the year you experience the finest spring skiing in the world at Squaw’s High Camp.
