If you live in a cold and damp city, it may feel like winter will never end. Storm after storm blows through and leaves you with nothing but icy sidewalks and a treacherous commute to work or school. But as you trudge outside to shovel out your car for the tenth time this winter, let your mind wander to a mountain near you, and remember that March is the best time of year to hit the slopes.
There is a reason why Liftopia launched the National Play Hooky & Ski Week from March 4 − 8. At Alta, to use one particularly day-dreamy example, March is historically the snowiest, deepest and most blissful month of the year. The Salt Lake City mountain celebrates its 75th anniversary this season, as veteran Alta skier Connie Marshall notes, “The gods bless us in March.” Indeed, the base depth in Little Cottonwood Canyon will top 100 inches within days. And if you live anywhere near an airport, a trip to Alta is easier than you may think. (To keep tabs on the snow, follow them on Instagram @AltaSkiArea and on Twitter @myAltaUT.)
The Mountain Collective Chronicles hit the road in January, but if we could do it again, Sesko and l would definitely pick March for road tripping. Or as Alta’s Social Media Manager Joe Johnson put it, “If I were you guys, I’d throw it in reverse and come back.” With National Play Hooky & Ski Week just around the corner, let these photos inspire you to hit the road get out to any of the more than 250 Liftopia partner mountains near you.
