Skiing isn’t just for the winter months! When it comes to spring, Switzerland has more than its fair share of high altitude slopes and snow-sure resorts.

Take advantage of less crowds, cheaper flights and shorter lift queues by skiing later on in the year. Here are some of the best Swiss resorts for late season skiing.

Let’s start with Zermatt, the highest of them all. The slopes are extremely high with each sector topping 3000m, and the Klein Matterhorn boasting the highest piste in Europe.

Due to its reliable snow cover, the resort is hugely popular for a late season ski holiday. Although Zermatt is open all year round, it only really has snow sure slopes from late November to the end of April, which makes it the perfect spot to take an Easter family ski holiday.

St Moritz

If you are looking for a late ski holiday, there are few better bets than St Moritz. The Corvatsch mountain is the place to be in spring, it’s higher than Corviglia (the other main mountain) and it’s also shadier.

Nearly all the slopes face north and hold their snow well all the way through to late April. The resort closes on the 6th of May, so if you’re looking for some glamour or looking for something more affordable, St Moritz is the place to go.

Thanks to its famous microclimate and high north-facing bowls, Andermatt has snow that few Alpine resorts can compete with. The main mountain, shady Gemsstock, has slopes between 2,000m and 3,000m consisting of black runs and off-piste routes.

It’s really an expert’s mountain with one or two intermediate pistes. The resort closes on the 31st of May, so if you’re thinking of booking a late season ski holiday in Andermatt, you have plenty of time.

Arosa, a small, precisely formed resort in the Graubünden mountains, a few hours away from Zurich, is the perfect resort for a weekend away in the spring time. The lifts take skiers up to 2653m above sea level, where there’s an amazing mix of red and blue pistes and a couple exciting blacks, perfect for skiers of all abilities, including children. If skiing isn’t your thing, enjoy the beautiful scenery whilst exploring the almost 60km of hiking trails that cross the surrounding region.

You’ve got until the 15th of April to book that late season ski holiday.

One of the most beautiful in all the Swiss Alps and 2012 winner of Best Ski Resort in Switzerland, is Saas-Fee. The village gets no direct sunlight early in the season, making it the coldest of resorts and perfect for late season skiing.

Saas-Fee really comes to life in the spring time where the snow is consistent, and the temperature is more tolerable. The highest pistes reach almost 3,600m above sea-level and most of the runs are supplemented by snow-making facilities.

So, you’ll have plenty to ski on right up until the end of the season when the resort closes on the 22nd April.
